If more than 30% of your income goes to rent, Revenu Québec pays a benefit that can reach $170 a month. It has existed for years.
And many people entitled to it do not receive it, for one simple reason.
Filing your tax return triggers nothing. The return is a condition of the program, not the application. You must make a separate application, online or on a form, and redo it every year. The gateway: having at least one dependent child, or being 50 or over.
EligibilityWho qualifies
The program runs in one-year periods. For the period from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027, the conditions are based on your 2025 year.
The gateway first. You must meet one of these two conditions:
- have at least one dependent child;
- or be 50 or over by 30 September 2027.
Let's be clear: a single person under 50 with no children is not eligible, even if rent swallows half their income. That is the program's limit, and it is better to know it now than to hope for nothing. The solidarity tax credit, by contrast, has no age condition.
If that first condition is met, you must also:
- live in Quebec, as an owner, tenant or roomer;
- spend at least 30% of your 2025 family income on housing;
- not exceed $50,000 in bank accounts, TFSAs and investments as at 31 December 2025;
- have filed your 2025 Quebec income tax return, if you lived in Quebec on 31 December 2025;
- not be exempt from tax for 2025.
The trapWhy so many eligible people do not have it
Because they believe filing their taxes is enough.
That is true for the solidarity tax credit and the GST credit: those are calculated from the return. The housing allowance is not. The return is one of the conditions to meet, but it does not count as an application.
A second, quieter trap: the application is not permanent. It covers a one-year period, from 1 October to 30 September. You must redo it for each new period, including when you are already receiving it.
$170 a month is $2,040 over a full year. For a household whose rent already exceeds 30% of its income, that is rarely pocket money.

Frequently askedYour questions
Who qualifies for the housing allowance in Quebec?
For the period from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027, you must live in Quebec, be an owner, tenant or roomer, and meet an entry condition: have at least one dependent child, or be 50 or over by 30 September 2027. You must also spend at least 30% of your 2025 family income on housing, not exceed $50,000 in bank accounts, TFSAs and investments as at 31 December 2025, and have filed your 2025 Quebec income tax return.
Does my tax return trigger the housing allowance?
No, and that is the main reason eligible people do not receive it. The return is a condition, not the application. You must make a separate application, online in My Account or with form LEX-165, and redo it every year.
What documents must I provide?
If you are a tenant or a roomer, you must attach the Statement of Rent form (LEZ-14) and a copy of your lease or renewal notice. Applying online in My Account, you have nothing to send by mail.
I am under 50 with no children. Can I get it?
No. The program's entry condition is having at least one dependent child or being 50 or over. A single person under 50 with no children is not eligible, even if their rent far exceeds 30% of their income. Other help exists: the solidarity tax credit has no such age condition.
Until when can I apply?
For the period from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027, the deadline is 30 September 2027. Applying early avoids losing months of payment, since the benefit is paid monthly during the period.
