Applying is often the part that feels daunting. In reality it is a series of clear steps. And whatever the program (social assistance, social solidarity…), you make a single application: the application for last-resort financial assistance.
Assistance is calculated from the day the office receives your forms. As soon as you think you might qualify, file, every day of delay is money lost.
The processThe 5 steps of an application
1. Check whether you qualify
The basic conditions: residing in Quebec, and having resources (money, property, income) below the permitted thresholds. An official government simulator, SimulAide, gives you a first idea in a few minutes, anonymously.
2. Fill in the forms
The main application form for last-resort financial assistance, plus schedules depending on your situation (dependent children, for example). Some situations use specific forms, notably if you are an asylum claimant or a minor.
3. File your application
At a Services Québec office, with your completed forms and photo identification issued by a public body. You can also send your forms online or by mail: in that case you will still have to appear in person for identity verification.
4. Processing
An officer may contact you to clarify details or ask for documents. Your file is analysed once it is complete.
5. The decision
You receive a notice by mail within 5 business days after all the essential documents have been received. If it is approved, the notice states your amount. If it is refused, it states the reasons, and you can request a review.
Documents to get ready
- Photo identification (issued by a public body)
- Your social insurance number (SIN)
- Proof of your income and assets (bank statements, pay stubs…)
- Your housing details (lease, rent amount)
- Depending on your situation: documents for dependent children, your immigration status…
