Picture a warehouse full of brand-new clothes that no one will ever buy, then picture them being destroyed, even though they were never worn. This isn't a one-off: it's how a large part of the industry normally works. According to the European Environment Agency, 4 to 9% of textiles put on the European market are destroyed before they're ever worn.

The problemWhy overproduction exists

In the classic industrial model, we produce in bulk before selling, based on forecasts. A brand orders thousands of units of a garment hoping they'll find buyers. This is called “push” production: make first, sell later.

Why this “always more” logic? Because of economies of scale: the more pieces you make, the less each one costs to produce. As the European Environment Agency explains, it becomes financially more attractive to overproduce than to risk missing a sale. We make “just in case,” not “because it's bought.”

And overconsumption amplifies everything: according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), we now buy 60% more clothing than about fifteen years ago, and we keep it half as long.

The consequencesMassive waste, before anyone even buys

The most outrageous part is that this waste happens before anyone uses the product. We spend water, energy and materials to make things that end up destroyed. A few figures, all from recognized sources:

To put the scale in perspective, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation sums it up like this: every second, one truckload of clothing is landfilled or burned. And less than 1% of old clothing goes on to be used to make new clothing.

Unsold waste is so serious that Europe is banning it. The European Ecodesign Regulation (ESPR), in force since 2024, bans the destruction of unsold clothing and footwear (for large companies since 19 July 2026). The European Commission estimates that in France alone, about 630 million euros of unsold products are destroyed each year.

The solutionProduce only what's already sold

Print on demand flips the logic completely: instead of producing then hoping to sell, you sell first, then produce. It's production “pulled” by real demand. In practice, it comes down to three steps:

Digital printing (like Direct-to-Garment for textiles) makes it possible to create a single copy, with no plate or setup, using exactly the amount of material needed.

No stop at a central warehouse, then a regional one, then a store. From the production site to you.
Every product made already has a buyer. The unsold rate is zero by design. No dormant stock, no warehouse to heat and cool, no destruction of surplus. The best waste is the kind that's never produced.

But be careful: print on demand isn't magic

Let's be honest, this model doesn't fix everything automatically. For it to truly deliver on its environmental promise, two conditions are essential:

  • Local production. Shipping parcels one by one from the other side of the world can cancel out the benefit, because of transport. Producing close to customers, for us, in North America, greatly reduces that impact.
  • The right materials. Printing on demand on cheap polyester is still polluting. The model is only truly green on responsible materials: organic cotton, recycled fibres, water-based inks.

What is print on demand?
