The basicsWhat is air pollution?
"Air pollution" is a mixture of gases and tiny suspended particles that have no business in our lungs. The World Health Organization (WHO) monitors five pollutants above all: fine particles (PM2.5 and PM10), ground-level ozone (O₃), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulphur dioxide (SO₂) and carbon monoxide (CO).
The most important to remember are PM2.5 fine particles. They measure around 2.5 micrometres, roughly 30 times finer than a human hair. That smallness is exactly what makes them dangerous: they slip deep into the lungs, and the finest even pass into the bloodstream. That is why they are considered air quality's number one enemy.
To give a sense of scale: in 2021 the WHO halved its recommended PM2.5 threshold, to 5 micrograms per cubic metre as an annual average (down from 10), because the science shows health effects even at low doses. The result: in 2019, 99% of the world's population was breathing air exceeding WHO thresholds.

Breathing polluted air, day after day, wears the body down. The WHO links air pollution to strokes, heart disease, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and respiratory infections. It also worsens asthma and allergies.

Air pollution does not fall from the sky on its own: it comes above all from what we burn. The main sources are transport (petrol and diesel engines), energy production and industry, home heating (wood, coal), agriculture and waste. To that is added, increasingly, wildfire smoke.
In much of the world, a major source is hidden inside homes themselves. Roughly 2.1 billion people, nearly a quarter of humanity, still cook over wood, coal, dung or kerosene, breathing toxic smoke every day (WHO). It is above all women and children, closer to the hearth, who pay the price, a reminder that air pollution is also a matter of social justice.
Finally there is a direct link with the climate, and it works both ways. First, the same culprits, burning fossil fuels, warm the planet and pollute the air. Second, that warming makes summers hotter and drier, which multiplies wildfires, and therefore smoke. In other words: acting on air pollution often means acting on the climate at the same time.
Without bordersA global problem, without borders
Air does not stop at customs. That is what makes atmospheric pollution so universal: smoke from a fire, or emissions from an industry or a power plant, can travel thousands of kilometres and degrade the air of people who had nothing to do with it.
The summer of 2023 showed this spectacularly. Vast wildfires in Canada filled much of North America with smoke: on some days New York found itself among the most polluted cities in the world, its sky turned orange. And the smoke did not stop there: carried by high-altitude currents, it crossed the Atlantic to Europe at the end of June. With a warming climate, such episodes risk becoming more frequent, on every continent.
The tool to know, wherever you are. Most cities and countries publish an air quality index (AQI), generally colour-coded: from green (good) to red and beyond (hazardous). The higher the number, the worse the air. Look up the one for your area: it tells you when to ease off on outdoor activity.

- When the air is bad (smoke or smog), take shelter. Stay indoors, close the windows, cut back on physical effort outside and favour a single "clean room" that you keep closed.
- Build your own purifier: the Corsi-Rosenthal box. A box fan + high-efficiency filters (MERV 13 rating, or a HEPA / equivalent filter) + tape. For a modest cost, it can cut fine particles dramatically (up to ~90% in tests).
- Use it safely. Choose a recent, certified fan, never leave it running unattended, keep it clear of walls and curtains, and change the filter as soon as it is clogged.
