Water

Abundant here, scarce elsewhere, and never free to produce.

Understand

In Québec, water is abundant, what is not is the chain that makes it drinkable: pumping, treating, heating, delivering, then treating again what goes down the drain. That chain is what costs energy, not the resource itself. And the water we use most is not the water from the tap: it is the water used elsewhere to make what we buy.

Take action

  1. Fix a dripping tap or a running toilet. A leak runs day and night without anyone noticing.
  2. Turn the water off while you soap up or brush your teeth. Nothing to buy, nothing to install.
  3. Never pour medication, oil or paint down the sink or toilet, treatment does not catch them.
  4. Keep the water you rinse vegetables in for your plants. It is clean and already paid for.
  5. If you water outdoors, do it early or late: in full sun much of it evaporates before reaching the roots.

Myth and reality

"We have so much of it here that wasting some changes nothing."

The resource is abundant, the treatment is not. Every litre from the tap has been pumped, filtered, disinfected, often heated, then treated again after use. Wasting drinking water mostly means wasting the energy that made it drinkable.
