Understanding what others go through changes how we speak to them.
Understand
Struggling and having a diagnosed condition are two different things, and neither is solved by willpower. A friend's role is not to diagnose or to fix anything, it is to stay reachable. What helps most is not the right sentence at the right moment: it is consistency, coming back to check in once everyone else has stopped.
Take action
- Ask "how are you, really?" and let the silence that follows sit there. The second answer is usually the true one.
- Listen without trying to fix. Jumping to a solution leaves people feeling brushed off.
- Check back two weeks later. Many people are fine the day you ask and less fine once the attention fades.
- Drop "snap out of it" and "others have it worse". Those lines help no one: they teach people to keep quiet.
- If someone mentions dark thoughts, take it seriously and offer to dial 988 together, call or text, 24/7.

Myth and reality
"If someone were really struggling, you'd be able to tell."
Most people who are struggling keep going to work, keep answering messages and keep saying they're fine. Holding up that front takes energy, and it is often when it gives way that those around them find out. Seeing no sign does not mean there is none.
